A note from Henrietta
The first earthenware factories opened in France at the end of the 17th century. The region of Saint-Amand-les-Eaux, in the north-east of the country, was perfect for hosting earthenware factories thanks to its road network, its rivers and forest. Multiple factories were then established between Orchies, Saint-Amand-les-Eaux and Valenciennes and started producing the famous ceramics from Saint-Amand-les-Eaux. Among these, Moulin des Loups Manufactures was one of the biggest earthenware producer: founded in the 19th century, the company had up to 5 factories spread across the region. Their last factory closed in the 1960s.
