What is a screen print?
Screen printing or serigraphy is a printing technique where a mesh is used to transfer ink or dye onto a substrate, except in areas made impermeable to the ink by a blocking stencil. One colour is printed at a time, so several screens can be used to produce a multi-coloured image or design. Traditionally, silk was used in the process, while today synthetic threads are more commonly used. First appeared in China, screen printing was introduced to Western Europe from Asia in the late 18th century, but did not gain large use in Europe until silk mesh was more available.
A group of artists coined the word “serigraphy” in the 1930s to differentiate the artistic application of screen printing from the industrial use of the process. “Serigraphy” is a compound word formed from Latin “sēricum” (silk) and Greek “graphein” (to write or draw).
