About the Hamsa Hand

The Hamsa Hand is a universal sign of protection, power, and strength that dates back to ancient Mesopotamia. Known as the Hand of Fatima in Islam (taking the name of Prophet Mohammed’s daughter) and the Hand of Miriam in Judaism (taking the name from Moses’ sister), it’s believed to protect against the evil eye and all negative energies.

The word “Hamsa” means “five,” representing the fingers of the right hand. For Hindus and Buddhists, it symbolizes chakras, energy flow in the body, the five senses and the mudras that effect them.

Widely adopted in the whole region of the Middle East, historically and traditionally, it was commonly carved in jet or formed from silver, a metal believed to represent purity and hold magical properties. The hand can be depicted with the fingers spread apart to ward off evil, or as closed together to bring good luck. Similarly, it can be portrayed with the fingers pointing up in warding, or down to bestow blessings. Highly stylized versions may be difficult to recognize as hands, and can consist of five circles representing the fingers, situated around a central circle representing the palm. 

From Morocco to Turkey, the Hamsa is a prevalent symbol of protection from misfortune and is widely incorporated into jewellery, home decor, and art. Many women across the region own at least one piece of jewellery featuring the hamsa, symbolising the enduring cultural significance of this talisman.
